The Department of Music at Sonoma State University is a place where students can thrive in a dynamic and creative atmosphere. We emphasize high-quality performance experiences and applied practical training. Each student's educational goals are guided by our knowledgeable and supportive faculty. Our program prepares students for professional careers as performers, K-12 music educators, studio teachers, and composers. We offer a multitude of performing ensembles, both large and small, in instrumental, choral, jazz, chamber, opera, and musical theatre. Our students have opportunities to perform in the Green Music Center's world-class venues, Weill Hall and Schroeder Recital Hall, and engage with the steady stream of professional guest artists who appear here. The department offers Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Education, Performance, and Jazz Studies, Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music, and Minors in Music. The department has been continuously accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1972.
The mission of the Department of Music is to teach music students of varying backgrounds and career aspirations the skills, knowledge and perspectives that will enable them to pursue productive lives as working artists, performers and scholars, avocationists and life-long audiences.
Balancing theoretical and historical perspectives with live performance in a well-rounded curriculum that embraces a broad spectrum of musical styles and applications, the Department emphasizes the personal development, needs, aspirations and unique potential of each individual student.
Finally, the Music Department is a cultural resource to the campus and to the community through its active roster of student performances and the professional activities of its faculty.
