Band Season

Welcome to the University Bands 2018-19 concert season. We have two performing ensembles: Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Concert Band. Dr. Andy Collinsworth conducts both.

The season includes three full-length concerts and three free mini-performances as part of the annual Wind Band and Orchestra Festival on March 6-8.

Frankenstein

The Sonoma State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble will bring to life, with music by composer Michael Shapiro, James Whale’s classic thriller Frankenstein! Starring Colin Clive and Boris Karloff in his debuting role as the Monster, the 1931 classic film did not contain any incidental music.

Thanks to composer Michael Shapiro, that has changed! The SWE will perform his haunting 2002 score to accompany the screening of the film! Bring the popcorn and don your favorite costume, because this event is going to be a scream !

Noma Winds is the Sonoma State University Department of Music’s premier youth wind ensemble. The group offers Sonoma County students a rich cultural and educational support group for high school instrumentalists currently enrolled in a band program, are home-schooled or otherwise don’t have access to a band program at their school. Sonoma State University proudly hosts the Sonoma County Middle and High School Honor Band Festival on Friday and Saturday, January 24-25, at the Green Music Center's Weill Hall. Rehearsals are open to the public. Daily parking charges $5 in effect. The Sonoma County Honor Band Concert takes place on Saturday, January 25, at 7:30 pm in Weill Hall. Dr. Kim Mieder’s pioneering community outreach program, NOMA WINDS, presents it’s first concert. As SSU’s Director of Music Education, Dr. Mieder reached out to Bay Area high school instrumentalists. The NOMA WINDS program not only offers performance opportunities but also private instruction, MasterClasses, and the opportunity to play great literature.
