Welcome to the 2018-19 Chamber Music season. Here you will find instrumental recitals by students, by resident faculty and guest artists, and by the SSU Brass Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble. The chamber music program is under the direction of Marilyn Thompson.
Written for any combination of two up to about 15 players, chamber music has no boss, no one person directing the sound and shaping the piece. It is a shared responsibility among all the players, alternating in roles of leadership and support as the music requires." —International Music Foundation

Judicaël Perroy has become widely known as an extraordinary virtuoso classical guitarist and musician with several prizes to his credit. In 1997, he captured the prestigious first prize of the 15 th Guitar Foundation of America International Competition and Convention awarding him tour of the United States and Canada with more than sixty concerts and master classes. In between his North American tour that year, he gave several concerts in France where his performances were broadcast live on France-Musique followed by extensive recital tours throughout the world.

Guest violinist Mariko Smiley joins The Navarro Trio, Chamber Artists-in-Residence since 1992, for this concert of piano trios by Dvořák and Brahms.
Mariko Smiley began violin studies at age six with her father, David Smiley, who was a violist with the San Francisco Symphony. She trained with former SFS musicians Leonard Austria and Stuart Canin before attending Juilliard, where she studied with Dorothy DeLay, Robert Mann, and Joel Krosnick. The Navarro Trio, music department Chamber Artists-in-Residence, was co-founded in 1992 by faculty members Marilyn Thompson, piano, and Jill Rachuy Brindel, cello. With violinist Victor Romasevich, The Navarro Trio has performed virtually the entire “standard” piano trio repertoire. They are advocates of out-of-print and rarely performed works and frequent collaborators with leading Bay Area musicians.

Lyric soprano Carol Menke is well known to Bay Area audiences as a vocal soloist and chamber music collaborator. She studied at the Franz Schubert Institute in Austria and has been coached by some of Europe’s finest recitalists, including Elly Ameling, Jörg Demus, and Norman Shetler. Upon hearing her perform one of his newly composed chamber works, the renowned composer Alan Hovhaness acknowledged and praised her “perfect musicianship.”
