New Music Sonoma

The Department of Music has played an active role in the creation of original music since its founding more than 50 years ago. New Music Sonoma presents Faculty and Student Composer concerts, the music alliance Sonoma Musica Viva, the Composition studio under the direction of Thom Limbert, and composer residencies. Recent guest composers include Pulsoptional, Ben Allison, John Mayrose, Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli, Mark Anderman and Shawn Baltazor. Directed by Department of Music chairman Dr. John Palmer, the twice-yearly Rock Collegium is an outgrowth of MUS 481. In this Special Topics Workshop students study various genres and styles of rock music. Then they compose and perform their own works their final project. The Rock Collegium is limited to 10-15 members playing guitars, vocals, bass, drums. Each concert features some deep cuts, some classic rock favorites, and like any good rock performance, some surprises.View Event Details

The concert will open with Taiko drumming pieces, composed and performed by student composers as part of their collaboration with Sonoma County Taiko .

This dynamic group of performers promotes cultural awareness of Taiko as a cultural art form and is working to build a community of acceptance, harmony, and respect through their love of Taiko (big drums) to the stage at the Green Music Center's Schroeder Hall.
