What I Do at SSU
Andy Collinsworthis the Director of Bands at Sonoma State University, conducting the university Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Concert Band. In addition, he teaches courses in conducting, instrumental music education methods and classical saxophone.
Andy Collinsworthis earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from Arizona State University, and he holds an MM degree in Applied Saxophone and BME in Music Education, both from the University of Nevada, Reno.
Dr. Collinsworth maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, adjudicator and clinician with bands throughout the western states, and he conducts professional and community bands in the Bay Area. The Sonoma Symphonic Wind Ensemble recently performed under his direction at the Western/Northwestern Division CBDNA Conference in March 2018. He is the founder/director of the Sonoma Summer Wind Band Conducting Symposium, an annual weeklong conducting workshop for high school and middle school music educators. He is the artistic director and coordinator of the Sonoma Invitational Wind Band and Orchestra Festival—a signature three-day event featuring high school ensembles that has recently become an affiliate regional festival of the national Music for All organization.
Dr. Collinsworth is an active member of several professional organizations. He is the President of the Western Division of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA). He held leadership positions in other state music education organizations, including the Bay Section of the California Music Educators Association and the California Band Directors Association (CBDA). In addition, he is a member of the National Association of Music Education, the California Band Directors Association, the Northern California Band Directors Association, and is an honorary member of the Kappa Kappa Psi band fraternity.
Dr. Collinsworth was recognized in 2014 as the John Swain Outstanding University Music EducatorAwardfor outstanding contributions to music education at the collegiate level by the California Music Educators Association. In 2011, he received the CMEA Don Schmeer/Byron Hoyt Band Educator Awardhonoring excellence in instrumental instruction and performance.
